As a form of social responsibility of environmental sustainability, Asia Pulp & Paper Group (APP) holds local society to plant 10 thousand local tree seeds of Meranti. The information released by the company in the press release in Jakarta.

The company explained that the activity is a part of reforestation of degraded forest at Giam Siak Kecil conservation in Riau, “In April 2014 APP launched a commitment to support conservation and restoration of 1 million hectares of forest in Indonesia, which is located at 10 landscapes in Sumatra and Kalimantan,” said Director of APP, Suhendra Wiriadinata.

Along with the commitment and by recommendation of Japanese environmental figure, Professor Akira Miyawaki, APP has prepared a forest restoration project as wide as 25 hectares in Giam Siak Kecil landscape.

The degraded area would be planted with about 10 thousand Meranti seeds. The 25 hectares area consist of 24 hectares which is laid in core zone of Giam Siak Kecil in Humus distrik, Kabupaten Bengkalis as degraded area and 1 hectare conservation area in Pertiwi Rasau Kuning Distrik area, Kabupaten Siak.

Suhendra explained that the plantation is involving local societies which is aimed to recover the forest as its previous native condition. The local society involvement is also expected could rise the consciousness of the important of plantation especially in degraded area. “The plantation program has duration of one year and two years cultivation by support from Sinar Mas Forestry (SMF)," Suhendra said.

APP invites International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and Badan Penelitian dan Pengembangan Kehutanan di Kuok Riau (Forda Kuok) to collaborate in the program.
